You will probably be surprised to learn that it is possible to become one’s own beautician and one’s own cosmetics and creams at home, using those ingredients which are usually found in most homes.

Simple preparations that you can mix in your own kitchen will bring about a major upheaval in your beauty programme.

Always remember, however, to mix your creams and cosmetics in small amounts, as home recipes lack the usual preservatives found in commercial products.

The simple home recipes included in this chapter have been used over and over again for generations. The reason for their productivity is that they work. Years ago, a painted woman was considered a ‘’bad woman’’ and most women wouldn’t cover up their defects with cosmetics.

In order to be attractive, a woman had to have good skin; and the secret of their good skin lay in the various home remedies they used.

When you discover how truly helpful these old-time secrets are, you will probably use them more and more in your basic beauty care.

Good luck and happy mixing.

NIGHT CREAMS
1.    What you need

2 tablespoons lanolin

2 tablespoons cocoa

3 tablespoons almond oil

2 tablespoons rose water.

Put the first three ingredients in a glass bowl. Place the bowl in a pan of hot water and heat over a low flame, until the contents of bowl melt into a smooth paste. For stirring use a wooden spoon. Do not use a metallic spoon as the ingredients will act on the metal and a chemical reaction will take place.

Remove the bowl from the hot water and add rose water to it. Mix well.

Allow the mixture to cool. Store it in a non-metallic container.

Use daily just before going to bed.

This cream is also good for getting rid of lines on face and throat.

2.    What you need

1 tablespoon wheat germ oil

1 tablespoon apricot kernel oil

3 tablespoons boiled water.

8 tablespoons lecithin (the water dispersible kind).

2 tablespoons avocado oil

2 tablespoons sunflower seed oil

2 tablespoons walnut oil

1 tablespoon arrowroot powder

A few drops of your favourite perfume.

Blend all the ingredients well in a glass bowl. Make sure that you do not use granular lecithin or your night cream will not be effective.

Store in a glass jar.

Massage gently on face and neck. Leave on overnight.
